Expectations only make us miserable

Our thought life shapes our world view, emotions, and how we see new opportunities. The question becomes; what role do expectations play in our thought life? “
Expectations only me make us miserable
How can I say that? Expectations are different than having Goals.
Expectation means; the act or state of looking forward or anticipating
Goals are; the purpose toward which an endeavor is directed; an objective
Goals are great. I am a big advocate of setting goals to drive desired behavior. However when we attach anticipation with an emotional attachmenthey become expectations.
Expectations are clearly defined outcomes in our minds with emotional attachments. How often however do outcomes play out exactly as we planned? It is rare to have an expectation that is perfectly met. That is one reason why it drives me crazy when I read a corporate mission statement that says …” we plan to meet and exceed our customer expectations…”
The secret is to set goals, not expectations and we will not be disappointed.
